Ravenna has been designated by the Government as Italian Capital of Culture for 2015 and will share this title with the other finalists in the competition for the European Capital of Culture (Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia and Siena). The title of Italian Capital of Culture is thus the result of the bidding process for 2019, the high value of which was praised by the government and by the commission itself. This extraordinary experience has been able to mobilize thousands of citizens and bequeathed many ideas and projects concerning the future of the city.

We would first like to thank the Staff of Ravenna 2019 for its excellent work, and then all cultural, social and economic associations as well as all citizens who have accepted the challenge of the candidacy and devoted their time to it with passion and commitment, enabling our city to reach the final and win the second place.

As the Italian Capital of Culture, Ravenna is given the opportunity to keep part of that legacy alive by implementing its projects to be scheduled until 2021 at least, when we will celebrate the centenary of Dante Alighieri’s death.

During its year as Capital of Culture, Ravenna will rely on some state funding. The decree dated 12 December 2014 has already provided 200,000€ to which further 800,000€ will be added thanks to a a recent inter-ministerial decree signed by the Minister of Heritage and Culture and Tourism and by the Minister for Regional Affairs.
